Annie’s Amazing Story – Treatment for Stage 4 Colon Cancer During Pregnancy
At the age of 34, Anne “Annie” Clausen was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer that had metastasized to other parts of the body. Annie was pregnant during treatment and managed to stay positive throughout the ordeal, giving birth naturally to a healthy baby girl, Codi Grace, and is continuing treatment.
Dr. Anton Bilchik, Chief of General Surgery, Director of Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Program, and Director of Gastrointestinal Research Program at Saint John’s Cancer Institute, performed her surgeries. Dr. Bilchik actively took part in “meeting of the minds,” the multidisciplinary gastrointestinal tumor board at Providence Saint John’s Health Center that collaborated and devised the safest way to save Annie and her unborn child. Annie also received radiation and is undergoing chemotherapy.
Peter finds solace at Saint John’s – A diagnosis of esophageal cancer treated by Dr. Anton Bilchik
Before Peter received surgery he went through chemotherapy and radiation in order to reduce the tumor size, a technique known as neoadjuvant therapy and widely recognized.3
Peter gives us his account of Dr. Bilchik just before surgery, “Dr. Bilchik asked me, ‘shall we do it,’ and I said, ‘yes, let’s do it!’” Peter reports this type of concern and care for himself from Dr. Bilchik helped him regain a sense of agency through a process in which he was consistently relying on others.
