Anton Bilchik MD Discusses Colorectal Cancer Statistics
Anton Bilchik MD is one of the nation’s leading cancer surgeons with a special interest in treating colorectal cancer. As such, Dr Bilchik is passionate about sharing information about colorectal cancer. Here are some facts and statistics he thought you should know.
Colorectal cancer affects the last section of the large intestine, known as the colon, and the rectum.
Colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the United States. Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women, and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men and women combined. In 2010, doctors diagnosed 131,607 people with this condition: 67,700 men and 63,907 women. That year, 52,045 people died from the disease, including 27,073 men and 24,972 women.
Overall, your risk for developing colorectal cancer is about one in 20. Women have a slightly lower risk for developing the disease.
Fortunately, incidence and mortality rates are decreasing. The incidence of colorectal cancer has decreased by 3.2 percent among men and 2.8 percent among women, each year between 2000 and 2009. Deaths from the disease have also declined in both genders by 3.1 percent per year. The American Cancer Society estimates there were 102,480 new cases of colon cancer and 40,340 new cases of rectal cancer in 2013.
Advanced diagnostics and treatments, along with better lifestyle choices, are largely the reasons for this improvement. Screening helps doctors see and remove intestinal polyps before they can turn cancerous; treatments like the surgery Anton Bilchik performs saves lives. Today, there are more than one million survivors of colorectal cancer living in the United States.
