Anton Bilchik Discusses the Role of Food in the Prevention of Colorectal Cancer

Dr. Anton Bilchik wants to talk with you about food because he knows that proper nutrition and a healthy diet are important weapons against the development of cancer of the colon and rectum. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer-related cause of death in the United States, claiming more than 50,000 lives in this country each year. Consuming a healthier diet can drastically reduce those numbers.

Overall, diets rich in whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables are associated with lower risks for colorectal cancer, although researchers have not yet determined which factors are important. Many studies link the consumption of processed and red meats with an increased risk for colorectal cancer

Nutrition Research Results

Anton Bilchik MD has closely followed colorectal cancer research; he reports mixed results. Some research suggests taking a multivitamin with folic acid to reduce the risk for colon cancer, while other research shows high doses of folic acid increases the risk. Additionally, research shows mixed results when it comes to diets high in magnesium. Calcium intake, in either supplemental or natural forms, may or may not affect the risk for colorectal cancer. Dr. Bilchik recommends eating a well-rounded diet for best protection from this disease.

Consuming a healthy diet also reduces your waistline; reaching and maintaining a healthy weight increases your protection from colorectal cancer. While obesity increases the risk for colorectal cancer, in both men and women, the risk is greater in obese men than in obese women.
