Anton Bilchik MD Discusses Types of Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer death in the United States. Dr. Anton Bilchik, MD, explains that the most common type of cancer called adenocarcinoma arises in the  exocrine cells, which produce digestive juices. This type accounts for 95 percent of pancreatic cancers and is the most aggressive. Neuroendocrine tumors originate in the islet cells that produce insulin, glucagon and other hormones. These are generally less aggressive and many are cured with surgery alone. It is important to distinguish between these types because the treatment is different.
